The Cop and the Anthem
Soapy, a homeless man, was determined to get arrested and spend the winter in jail. He tried various schemes, such as shoplifting and causing a disturbance in a restaurant, but his attempts were unsuccessful. Finally, he decided to try something different: he would pretend to be drunk and disorderly.
Soapy staggered down the street, slurring his words and acting intoxicated. He hoped that a policeman would see him and arrest him. However, to his surprise, the police ignored him. He tried even harder, but still, no luck.
Feeling defeated, Soapy sat down on a park bench and began to think about his failure. As he sat there, he noticed a group of carolers singing Christmas hymns. The music touched him deeply, and he began to feel a sense of peace and hope.
For the first time in a long time, Soapy realized that he didn't need to be arrested to find happiness. He had found it in the simple beauty of the Christmas carols. With a newfound sense of purpose, Soapy decided to turn his life around. He left the park and began to search for a job.
