Chapter 2 The Adventures of Toto

1. How does Toto come to grandfather’s private zoo?

Toto comes to grandfather's private zoo when he buys him from a tonga-driver for five rupees.

2. “Toto was a pretty monkey.” In what sense is Toto pretty?

Toto is pretty with bright, mischievous eyes, pearly white teeth, and a quick and wicked personality. His tail adds to his good looks and serves as a third hand.

3. Why does grandfather take Toto to Saharanpur and how? Why does the ticket collector insist on calling Toto a dog?

Grandfather takes Toto to Saharanpur because he would not allow his companions to sleep at night. So, he takes Toto to Saharanpur in a big black canvas kit-bag. The ticket collector insists on calling Toto a dog, and Grandfather has to pay for him as a dog, even though Toto is a monkey.

4. How does Toto take a bath? Where has he learnt to do this? How does Toto almost boil himself alive?

Toto takes a bath by testing the temperature with his hand and gradually stepping into the water up to his neck. He rubs soap on himself and dries near the kitchen-fire.

Toto almost boils himself alive when he gets into a large kitchen kettle with his head sticking out. As the water starts to boil, he hops up and down until rescued by Grandmother.

5. Why does the author say, “Toto was not the sort of pet we could keep for long”?

Toto's mischievous nature and destructive behavior make it difficult for the family to keep him as a pet. His constant tearing of things and causing havoc leads Grandfather to sell him back to the tonga-driver.
