 Types of Sentences

Sentences can be classified into four types based on the meaning they convey.


  1. Declarative :  states something 


Subject + Verb + …………..( . )

  1. Affirmative/ Positive statement

I play chess.

  1. Negative 

My brother doesn't play chess.

  1. Emphatic

          She does sing.

I speak English.

  V1 = do+V

I don’t speak English. 

I do speak English. 

She cooks food. 

V(s/es) = does + V

She doesn’t cook food. 

She does speak English. 

We played well. 

V2 = did +  V

We didn’t play well.

We did play well.



  1. Interrogative :  Asks something

Verb  +   Subject  ………… ( ? )

  1. Yes / No questions

Do you speak Hindi?

  1. Wh- questions

Where are you going?

       

Positive

Negative

Do I speak English?

Don’t I speak English?

Does she cook food? 

Doesn’t she cook food? 

We played well. 

We didn’t play well.



  1. Imperative Sentences:   Instructs, requests or advises

  1. Commands

Close the door.

  1. Requests

Please close the door

  1. Advice

Be careful while cooking.


  1. Exclamatory Sentences  : Expresses a strong feeling 


Oh! Alas! Hurrah!   Subject +  Verb1
