Noun Modifiers- AP SSC Q. No 25

What is a Noun Modifier?

A noun modifier is a word or phrase that modifies or describes a noun.

Functions of Noun Modifiers:

1. Describe or characterize a noun.

2. Identify or specify a particular noun.

3. Provide additional information about a noun

Examples:

1. The tired teacher. (Adjective modifier)

2. The city of gold. (Noun adjunct modifier)

3. The book on the shelf. (Prepositional phrase modifier)

Types of Noun Modifiers:

  • Adjectives: The big house.
  • Adjectival Phrases: The man with the red shirt.
  • Noun Adjuncts:  A stone wall.
  • Prepositional Phrases: The book on the table.

How to combine two sentences with a noun modifier to make a simple sentence:

Step 1: Identify the noun and the modifier

  • Identify the noun in one sentence and the modifier in the other sentence. The modifier should describe the noun.

Step 2: Combine the sentences

  • Combine the two sentences by placing the modifier before the noun. Make sure that the resulting sentence is grammatically correct and makes sense.

Step 3: Simplify the sentence

  • Simplify the sentence by removing any unnecessary words or phrases.

Example:

Sentence 1:      The book is on the table.
Sentence 2:      The book is old.

Combined sentence: The old book is on the table.

In this example, "old" is the modifier that describes the noun "book".

By combining the two sentences, we get a simple sentence with a noun modifier.
