Long Answer Questions

1. Give a character-sketch of Nelson Mandela highlighting his struggle against the apartheid regime for the human rights of his people.

Nelson Mandela fought hard against apartheid in South Africa and became a hero. He suffered a lot in prison but helped bring democracy to South Africa. Mandela didn't always feel the need to be free. Later, he understood that his childhood freedom wasn't real. When he joined the African National Congress, he wanted freedom for his people more than for himself. This made him brave, even though it meant living a hard life. Mandela thanked all the other black heroes who fought for freedom. He knew that everyone should be free, or no one truly is. He cared about all people.

2. “Depths of oppression” create “heights of character.” How does Mandela illustrate this? Can you draw similarities between the freedom struggles of Africa and India?

The tough times of oppression made people like Oliver Tambo, Walter Sisulu, Luthuli, and Dadoo strong and wise. They fought for freedom and equal rights for black people in South Africa. Similarly, in our country, heroes like Mahatma Gandhi, Chandra Shekhar Azad, Bhagat Singh, and Raj Guru fought bravely for our freedom from British rule. They endured a lot of suffering but remained courageous. These heroes showed that even in the face of cruelty and hardship, people can stand up for what's right and make a difference.

3. Why was Nelson Mandela overwhelmed with a sense of history? How did he succeed in ending the apartheid regime in SouthAfrica?

Nelson Mandela felt a deep sense of history because he saw how, long ago, white people in South Africa treated black people badly. But when Mandela was older, things changed. By the end of the 1900s, apartheid ended, and everyone, no matter their skin color, got equal rights. Mandela wanted everyone to be free from poverty and suffering. He also wanted a world where no one was treated unfairly because of their gender or race. Mandela's ideas helped make South Africa a fairer place for everyone.
